Outdoor Playdough

DSC01285We made yellow playdough today, as yellow is the boys favourite colour. I have a great recipe that works every time and is super easy!

Microwave Playdough

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • food colouring

Mix all ingredients and microwave on high for 3-5 minutes. Stir every minute until it is so thick that you can’t, and then knead it. Store in an air tight container.

The boys always help measure the ingredients and then they do all the kneading, this is their favourite part.

DSC01297Once we made the playdough we took it outside to play with in the nice weather. I thought we could make some herb smelling playdough with the mint and chives we have growing in the backyard (an idea I got from here) but the boys went to work making creations with all the plants growing in the back that I just went with and watched them create and explore!

DSC01302They used mint leaves, chives, strawberry plant leaves, pieces of wood and lilac branches.

They really spent a lot of time creating and I am glad I just let them go and have fun. We will do the herb smelling playdough another day.

I have learned in the past few years that sometimes you just have to go with the flow. The activity may not be what you planned, but it will be fun and maybe even better! And my kids always seem to be happier when whatever we do is their idea, they are always so proud of themselves for thinking on their own.
